Fairtrade

The United Reformed Church strongly has shown its commitment to working for change for the world’s poor communities through Fairtrade by supporting the Fairtrade Foundation, Traidcraft and other Fair trade initiatives over the years.
We encourage every church to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee, to move forward on the use of other Fairtrade products such as sugar, and to promote Fairtrade Fortnight every year.

Fairtrade Synods

All Synods now have Fairtrade status with the support of a minimum of 1/3 of the churches.

The following Five Goals need to be agreed by your Synod.

  1. To support and promote Fairtrade, further encourage the use and sale of Fairtrade products and to serve only Fairtrade coffee and tea at meetings it is responsible for.
  2. To encourage local churches to adopt the same policy. As far as possible, display literature advertising the fact that Fairtrade products are used and served there.
  3. Ensure Fairtrade tea, coffee and other products, if possible, are used and/or sold by more than a third of the local churches of your denominational area.
  4. Attract further media coverage and continue to raise awareness of the FAIRTRADE Mark.
  5. Set up a Fairtrade steering group to take responsibility for monitoring that goals continue to be met and developed over a period of time.

Commitment for Life is happy to share information with churches, and synods and pass on achievements to others just starting on the path of becoming a Fairtrade church, town or synod.
