The
United Reformed Church has always taken seriously its global
responsibility. Belonging to the World Church and
Commitment for Life represent the outworking of this
as together we engage with global issues in partnership with
the Council for World Mission, Christian Aid and the World
Development Movement. In a globalised world every church is
asked to play its part in tackling the structures that keep
people poor, in challenging inequality and injustice.
With the Vision Statement of January 2004 we can say that
the United Reformed Church places an ever higher priority
on the gospel call for freedom and justice for everyone. This
echoes Jesus’ own mission to “bring good news to the poor,
liberation to the oppressed” and to usher in the kingdom of
God and God’s justice. Time and again God selects the weak
and the powerless to receive blessings and fulfi l God’s purposes.
Seeking to live God’s justice, we know it is wrong that millions
of people do not get enough food or have access to clean water
or basic health care. This has led to an increasing awareness
of the need to move away from charity alone, towards challenging
the structures which keep people in poverty. This is part
of living out our faith in a global context. Across the world
we are networked in a campaign for debt relief, now linked
with campaigns for Fairtrade and Trade Justice, hearing from
our partners how international trade impacts their lives.
We have pledged to work for the Millennium Development Goals
which aim to halve the proportion of people living in poverty
and increase access to education and health services by 2015.
